January 2005 - SPAG Committee reaction to recent Gladedale Exhibition
and follow-up web site |
| |
The exhibition by Gladedale on the 20th
January was very much as we expected from a large professional
developer with top consultants and architects. Nowhere however
did it address the real desire of the residents of Streatley
(as expressed by greater than 95% of those who were approached
to sign the STOP Gladedale petition) – that is to leave
all the land unchanged.
With respect to the land North of the High Street, Gladedale
are trying to bribe the village by saying they "would look
very favourably upon gifting this land to the community",
if they are allowed to build 8 to 12 houses on the South side.
It is important to stress, all the Gladedale land is outside
the village Settlement Boundary and most residents understand
that allowing even a small number of houses outside the Settlement
Boundary would create a planning precedent, encouraging other
landowners in the area to also apply for development. We have
no need to be influenced by such inducements, if we stand firm
and united and maximise opposition, we can ensure that under
current planning policies any planning application will be disallowed.
Note: Nowhere to our knowledge in their exhibition or on their
web site do they mention the West Berkshire Council Local Plan
Settlement Boundary. Clearly it is misleading or at least disingenuous
for Gladedale to present their development options, all outside
the Settlement Boundary, as though they were viable options
under the village's present circumstances. |
